Nonprofit Board service: What does it mean to serve on a nonprofit organization board?

The Leadership Connection's BTP training includes a comprehensive overview of nonprofit board service. Expectations vary depending on the organization and its specific board needs. Traditional governing responsibilities include:

Commitment to the mission and goals of the organization
Attendance at board meetings
Service on a board committee
Contribution of expertise to the strategic development of the board and the organization
Financial and in-kind contributions of time and resources
Assistance with fund raising and attendance at special events
Represent and advocate for the organization's goals and mission
Disclosure of any conflicts of interest

The Leadership Connection asks for a two-year commitment to board service upon a successful match between an executive and nonprofit organization.

The matching process

The Leadership Connection matching process will draw on Jericho Road's deep knowledge and professional assessment of Lowell nonprofits to facilitate thoughtful matching between nonprofit boards and executives. The Jericho Road Project has over 8 years' combined experience matching and placing volunteers in nonprofit organizations in Lowell. Jericho Road has facilitated over 350 collaborations between hundreds of executives and its 100 nonprofit clients. Both Jericho Road volunteers and its nonprofit clients give a nearly 90% satisfaction rate for collaborative projects.

Matching logistics

1. Participating nonprofit organizations will be screened, and complete a thorough application process, including a board skills gap analysis, in order to better understand their needs.
2. Corporate participants will be personally interviewed by Jericho Road Project staff prior to matching with a nonprofit in order to better understand their priorities and interests.
3. Current nonprofit board members will participate in the training, allowing corporate participants to personally meet and interact with them.
4. Jericho Road staff will facilitate a personal, no-obligation match-making process between the executive and the nonprofit*.
